Chau for now

For the first time in my life, I am going to be travelling alone. Hmmmmm, yes I am 30 years old but have never done the gap year before…I have a very protective mum.

So where am I going? I’m going to the coffee country, Medellin and Santa Marta.

For two weeks.

I can’t wait.

I’ve heard that the coffee country is beautiful. I’ve got family in Medellin who I’m staying with and will be relaxing at my aunt’s apartment in Santa Marta, literally doing nothing, but sleeping, eating, swimming and tanning.

Thanks to odd dates and the arrival of cheap airline Viva Colombia, I managed to get very cheap tickets with Avianca.

I will be back in two weeks. I am excited and scared at the same time.

Wish me luck and I’ll catch up with you soon!

  1. Have a great time – Manizales is probably the most attractive of the cities of the Eje Cafetero (people from Pereira and Armenia will hate me for saying that!) but also the coldest and rainiest, but yes, the countryside is lovely round those parts, and the Parque Los Nevados is on the doorstep. Medellin is a wonderful city – really dynamic, forward-looking and buzzing, great climate, and the most amazing wall of mountains all round it. Lots to see and do if you like culture and the arts, and you’ll end up on the metro and the cable car at some point, probably to Parque Arvi. The main attraction in Santa Marta itself is the house where Simon Bolivar died (actually some way from the city centre), but you’ll be more interested in where to get a sun tan – most locals go to El Rodadero beach, but if you get the chance to go further east to Taganga beach and Parque Tayrona, take the opportunity. Enjoy!

  2. Hope your trip is going well.
In Bogotá today trying to get my resident visa. Experienced something of what you went through with your cédula. Suffice to say 6 hours of running around the city in taxis trying to satisfy the functionary’s demands for documents did not produce results. Will have return, at great expense, again from Armenia in the near future.

The more I deal with governments the more I understand anarchists.
